Pin Parvati Trek

The Pin Parvati trek can be challenging in stages and therefore recommended only to people who have previous trekking experience. You will be required to cross a > moderately difficult pass , do a few river crossings and walk long stretches on certain days. Just like its sibling, the Bhabha Pass, it offers unmatched variety and excitement. The landscape you start from and the one you finish in have nothing in common other than the fact that both are mesmerising.

The contrast is very refreshing indeed. You add to this the adrenaline rush of crossing ice cold rivers and a high Himalayan pass (5300 m) for which the build-up starts happening on Day 1 and you have all the ingredients of a thriller. The day you cross the pass you will also get a basic perspective of what mountaineering means. Thankfully it's not a very technical pass to cross and your guides will be there to assist you if required. Another standout feature of the Pin Parvati Pass trek is that as you move along the trail from the Kullu valley into the Spiti valley, you see a drastic change in culture, with both cultures being distinct, rich and welcoming.

The Pin Parvati trek starts from the beautiful Kullu valley which is known for its lush green landscapes, hospitable people, inviting meadows, apple orchards and rich culture. From here a demanding 5 days walk takes you literally on top of the world where you walk on gigantic snow fields to reach the Pin Parvati pass (5300 m). You will probably spend just about an hour here, but in this short time, capture sights which will last for a lifetime for sure! There are views of high mountain ranges, glaciers, ice walls and underlying valleys all conjuring a spectacular picture. From here we descend into the wonderful Spiti valley again through snow fields and boulder ridden terrain.

Spiti valley is in every sense as beautiful, if not more, than its famous neighbour, Ladakh. Only, it is still untouched by the impact of tourism and not too many people are aware of its surreal existence. The landscape of this valley is stark and spectacular and challenges one's idea of beauty at all stages. This valley is open only for a few months every year as the high passes leading to it get blocked by snowfall.

The trail ends at a small and quaint village called Mudh in the famous Pin valley . From here we will drive to Kaza, the district headquarters of Spiti. Spiti is surrounded by ranges of the Greater Himalaya in a semi-circular arc, separating it from Lahaul on the west, Kullu to the south and Kinnaur to the southwest. These ranges prevent the moisture-laden clouds bringing the Indian monsoon from reaching the region, thus creating in Spiti, a bleak and arid landscape common with Ladakh and Tibet. Lacking vegetative growth, the exposed terrain is a geologist's paradise. It records every geological age from the Pre-Cambrian to the recent, in pristine formations.

The Pin Parvati Pass Trek and Spiti Trek are the most captivating trekking trails in Himachal Pradesh. Witness the beautiful flowers and relish the high-spiritedness of the mountains, while wandering alongside the border of the Pin Valley National Park. This will let you to spot sensational wildlife. Remember, the route to Pin Parvati Pass is decided on the basis of your health condition, fitness and previous trekking experience and fitness.

Alike other treks, even for the Spiti Valley Trek - GIO Adventures assists you with professionally qualified expert guides. Our guides will run a small course on climbing techniques to get you to know more about the sport and get comfortable with it.

Detail itinenary

After breakfast, we drive to Barsheni, start point of the trek and from here hit the trail leading to Khirganga. Today's walk is through a wooded region and is not very demanding. Khirganga is a beautiful meadow with sulphur springs and a few dhabas (eating joints). Overnight in tents.

Today you walk through meadows negotiating several ascents and descents. The trail for most parts is through forested area and then you come out into open meadows of Tunda Bhuj. Here you can't miss the massive granite cliffs overlooking the meadows. Towards the end of the walk for today you will experience the joy of crossing the river using a Jhula pul (Pulley Bridge). Overnight in tents.

Today we will have to make a couple of tricky river crossings before reaching our destination for the day. First river crossing is over an exposed boulder on a side stream and then over the Parvati river over the Pandu bridge which is a gigantic boulder with a stone staircase on one side. One will need to manoeuvre carefully and with assistance from our guides and we might put ropes, if required. Ody Thach is again a massive meadow with the majestic Kullu Eiger peak overlooking it. Here you are sure to meet a few shepherds and get first-hand information on the condition of the trail leading to the pass. Overnight in tents.

Today the trail is flattish and along the river. Towards the end of the trail there is a climb up a lateral moraine which can take some effort. After the climb you reach a small temple very scenically located. We will spend some time here and then walk down through a maze of small rivulets to reach our campsite. Overnight in tents.

This day is to give our bodies a good rest so that we are fully acclimatised and charged for the next 2 days where we will need to push our bodies a bit. Today enjoy the experience of not doing a thing! Overnight in tents.

The adventure begins today with wading required to cross a few rivulets. Once out of this area we will climb through a steep terrain where the trail is not well marked and some sections where it is missing in parts or completely. Towards the end we will traverse through a moraine section to reach a snow field. Depending on the snow conditions we will pitch the tents and one might have to camp on snow today. After a brief rest your guides will go on a recce trip and check out the conditions for crossing the pass. Landscape around the campsite is beautiful with glaciers, snow fields, moraines and the sounds of an odd avalanche. We will sleep very early today in preparation of an early start. Overnight in tents.

Today the weather and trail conditions will decide what time we leave but it's going to be an early morning departure for sure, between 2-5:00 a.m. The walk is in all probability going to be totally on snow. From the camp we start with a steep climb to reach a col from where it's a walk through big snow fields till we reach close to the pass where we ascend for about an hour to get to the top of the world!! Views are completely mind boggling and feeling completely amazing. You will be proud of your achievement!! From here we will descend again through snow fields and moraine sections. This is a long descent over scree and rocks to reach the Pin river in Spiti valley. After another river crossing we reach the campsite and relax. Enjoy a hot cup of tea along with various pass stories doing the round. Overnight in tents.

The hike today is long but very gentle and beautiful with typical Spiti landscape all around. There are multi coloured mountains and vast open grasslands with the beautiful Pin river flowing by. You will pass by a few shepherd camps and cross a few streams along the way with the last one needing to be handled carefully. From the trail we get a view of Mudh village far away with its barley fields, at the base of a big and barren mountain. On reaching Mudh we spend some time in this quaint village before driving to Kaza. On reaching Kaza we check into a hotel and enjoy a much deserved hot shower. We celebrate the successful completion of the trek with a party in the evening. Overnight in the hotel.

After breakfast, drive to Manali via the Kunzum pass and Rohtang pass. TRIP ENDS HERE.
